Workshop: Shell Scripting for Biologists

Dear colleagues,

We are excited to invite you to our upcoming online workshop on “Shell Scripting for Biologists.” This workshop aims to provide you with the essential skills and knowledge to leverage the power of shell scripting for bioinformatics analysis and data processing.

Date: June 19th, 2023
Time: 10:00 – 15:00

Agenda:
10:00 – 10:30 1. Introduction to Shell Scripting
10:30 – 11:00 2. Basic Shell Commands
11:00 – 11:30 3. Automating Tasks with Shell Scripts
11:30 – 12:00 4. Data Manipulation and Processing
12:00 – 13:00 Lunch break
13:00 – 13:30 5. File Input and Output
13:30 – 14:00 6. Working with Bioinformatics Tools
14:00 – 14:30 7. Best Practices and Tips for Shell Scripting
14:30 – 15:00 8. Practice
(Each session will have 15 mins tutorial and 15 mins for self practice with written instructions to follow.)

Throughout the workshop, you will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on exercises, practice writing shell scripts, and receive guidance from our experienced instructors. By the end of the workshop, you will have a solid foundation in shell scripting and be equipped with the skills to automate bioinformatics tasks, streamline data processing workflows, and enhance your productivity.

To participate in the workshop, please ensure that you have the following:

  • A stable internet connection
  • A computer with a web browser
  • Access to a Unix-like environment (e.g., Linux or macOS terminal). If you have Windows machine, please refer to this instruction.

We recommend that you have a basic understanding of the command-line interface, but no prior experience in shell scripting is required. This workshop is designed to accommodate both beginners and those with some scripting experience.

This workshop will be hosted online, please register with the link below. After registration, you will receive further details and the necessary workshop materials.

We look forward to your participation and an engaging workshop where you can enhance your shell scripting skills for bioinformatics analysis. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Dr. Chao-Chung Kuo (ckuo@ukaachen.de).
